Walled Garden House

The design strategy for this mews dwelling, is to create an alternative typology for the dual occupancy densification of inner suburban dwellings.

The red brick garden wall of primary dwelling, is wrapped around the original urban block to form a new walled garden. The house is made from the materials found in the area of brick and copper.

The house is then formed within this walled garden. The ground floor accommodation, of living area, study, the bedroom and bathroom is placed hard against the street within the brick walled enclosure, shielding the inner southerly courtyard.

Once within the house, the south and west facing glazed inner elevations open to the enclosed inner courtyard. Above, the first floor accommodation is enclosed in a recessed copper enclosure, aligning with the inner terrace, comprising; the master bedroom, en-suite and single bedroom.

The upper volume, re-orientated to the street, is the culmination of the architectural promenade, the large window providing a breakout view to the world beyond, it is public scale, a contrast to the private realm below.

Descending the stairs one crosses from the public to private, one glimpses the city beyond before entering into the private intimacy of the living areas below.
